Definitely try the Vampire Chronicles (it is also a series) by Anne Rice. Meyer’s series was inspired loosely by this series.

Peeps and The Last Days are good ones. They’re a series by Scott Westerfeld and therefore should be read in that order.
Umm, isn’t Interview With The Vampire (series by Anne Rice) vaguely romantic?
The Blue Blood Series (I’m not sure whether or not it’s really romantic, I’ve only read the first one).

Well, I tried. Good luck with that!

I’ve heard good things about Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, but I’ve not read them (they’re on my list for sure!).

    Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith
Published almost 10 years before Twilight the books are so similar that it seems unlikely that Stephenie Meyer, author of Twilight, hadn’t read them before. The characters are realistic, the plot is chilling and all four books seem to flow together perfectly. There is a bit more violence then in Twilight, but it is more thrilling and spooky. Caution: don’t read it at Midnight!
There are two books out currently. One holds "The Awakening" and "The Struggle" while the other holds "The Fury" and "Dark Reunion". At one time they were four books and still are, just in two. "The Struggle" is, in my opinion, the best, though "The Fury" is the most heart wrenching.
All in all, a very good series.

Children of the Night, by Mercedes Lackey. ~ A story of a vampire and a witch in New York in 1972. A great book!

Forever and the Night, by Linda Lael Miller. ~ A vampire’s desperate love for a woman forces him to unlock the secret of how vampires came to be.

Miller is also the author of several other vampire stories: Time Without End, Into the Night, Out of the Shadows, to name a few.

Have recommended this to many others– I was a LJ Smith fan– the previous vampire generation!

The Nightworld series by LJ Smith (like the other ppl said, it’s likely that Stephenie Meyer used these and the Vampire Diaries as ‘inspiration’. It’s about vampires, witches, shapeshifters and werewolves who fall in love with humans and try to stop an apocalypse).

You’ll probably like the Mediator Series by Meg Cabot. You can read the first 98 pages here.

It’s not for me but, it wasn’t at all a bad book. Atleast from what I’ve read. Instead of a vampire she falls in love with a ghost. If you actually want to purchase the book and read into the description you can go here.

If you want to read the first chapter of all the books and things like that. You can go to her website.

This weekend I am suppose to be going to the bookstore. I was thinking of getting the Vampire Academy books. If you find any interest in it you can read an excerpt from it here.

You can read about it on Amazon here.

I also want to get 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This is just something for you to look into. You can read about it here :P

I have read this book called Ghostgirl by Tonya Hurley. It was good. That is something you should definetly check out.
You can read about it at amazon here.

There’s this series called "The House Of Night Novel".
It includes Marked, Betrayed , Chosen , and Untamed. They are suppose to make another one called Hunted in March 2009. It’s not exactly your Twilight but, to me I found it to be better. They range around 310 pages but, they’re really good. It’s not about two different races but, in this series there are alot of wild adventures. The main character, Zoey, is more dominant than Bella. With the power she is granted she sorta has to be.

You can get the first book here
    http://www.amazon.com/Marked-House-Night...
You can also read the first chapter at the website. Here.
    http://www.houseofnightseries.com/pages/...
Here is some info about the book.
    http://www.houseofnightseries.com/pages/...

This is where you go to find info about the other books if you haven’t read any of them.

You can get a pre-order for Hunted at amazon here.

I also heard of this book called Vampire Diaries. It didn’t sound so bad. You can read about it here.

    Hope I helped :D

Oh and there is also this neat website where you type in a book that you’ve read and it suggests some books you might like.

definitly read Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Apart from Bram Stoker’s Dracula it is the best there is about vampires. And Twilight, when it comes to vampire stories, is just a childish book written by a mormon girl - thats why there is no erotica and sex which has to be always when you write about vampires, plus what kind of idea is making every vampire able to walk in the sunlight (only very old and powerful vampires should be able to do that) and shine or (which is the biggest heresy) making werewolves look like an oversized dogs (altough the idea about werewolves being native indians is a really nice touch)
