Many authors have written countless literary works, but the most popular among them was epistolary novel, “Dracula” written in the 19th century by an Irish manager turned author, Bram Stoker. He undertook a research of seven years, and went through many European folklore and vampire stories before starting writing on the subject. Though he was not the only person writing on the matter, he was the most popular among the lot. Later his writings were also used in theater performances and films. He used the supernatural element effectively to arouse a feeling of horror in the minds of the readers. The Dracula book by Stoker is a well-knitted novel and the absolute style of writing and the violent description of the bloody images like “The whole bed would have been drenched to a scarlet with the blood the girl had lost” are just perfect weapons to shiver the readers.
The writer has also effectively explored Victorian women and culture, and also added a flavor of seduction in his work. The story gives a vivid description of Dracula hypnotizing people and feeding on their blood. It also reveals the way in which the Dracula used to develop telepathy with its prey. Finally, Dracula is chased to his castle and destroyed by Abraham Van Helsing, a professor who cut his throat and stabbed him in his heart. With the end of the Dracula, his magic spell also ends. There influencing stories by eminent writers like Emily Gerard’s “Transylvania Superstitions” was also used as a source of information on these creatures.
Dracula, based on an original vampire has become a forerunner of vampire novels. In spite of a favorable review, when it was first published in the 19th century, the novel did not rule the market and was not among the bestsellers. But later on, it became very popular and the novel became a basis for as many as 160 films and plays like, Dracula (1931), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and to further the Bram’s great-grandnephew, Dacre Stoker has also written an official sequel to the Dracula, “The Un-Dead”, a documentary presentation with Ian Holt and Alexander Galant to satisfy the desires of Vampire story lovers and bring alive the emotions which the original novel was able to arouse.
