Which season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer should I focus on for the most complete characterization of Buffy?
I'm writing a paper on the characterization of the Gothic heroine as portrayed by Wilhelmina Murray in Dracula and by Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, my instructor suggested that it would be a good idea to focus on one (maybe two) season(s) of Buffy to research. So, what would be the best season to find the most complete development of Buffy as a heroine (preferably of the Gothic variety) and why?

Season five or six are the ones with the best character development. Season seven is pretty good for that, because it portrays Buffy when she's considered the strongest, even though it shows hard times. Season six shows development of Buffy because of her death, and at the end with the whole Willow fiesta. Season five shows development between Buffy and characters - especially Dawn - and would be best if you want more family-oriented characterization.
Season six and seven, especially six, show darker development.

Well, if you wanted the full arc of the Buffy character, I'd go with the 1st and 7th seasons. This will let you see the differences in her growth as a character. Thinking about it though, both kinda deal with her learning to accept her responsibility and being a leader.
If you want the "pursuit" of a heroine gothic bent, then maybe season 2, where the male vamp loses his soul and there's a very dark romance/prey thing going on.
I'm not sure, it depends on exactly what you are looking for, so I've included a link with brief descriptions of the seasons, maybe that will help.

I'm putting in a vote for Season 2. She got a lot of extra development in that season because the Big Bad wasn't just a random villain, but actually someone who had been close to her, and took delight in making her hurt. Also, the Buffy/Angel relationship was kinda Gothic Romance as a whole, and became even more so after he turned.

I kinda think season 5 because it shows how far she'd go to protect her family and the world, and her finally understanding her power and her "gift".

buffy is the best show ever
my top seasons would have to be seasons 5 is a good season and it shows tht she would do anything to save the world even if it means risking her own life
my next season would have 2 be season 7 it is the bst season ever is shows how the slayer became it also has a gd ending and it show wht a true hero is
