What was the story behind Vlad the Impaler's madness?
Vlad the Impaler was Prince of Wallachia, His three reigns were in 1448, 1456–62, and 1476. In the English-speaking world, Vlad is best known for the legends of the exceedingly cruel punishments he imposed during his reign and he also inspired Dracula novels and movies. So whats the story behind his madness and reign of torture?
No Man1hull: I also saw somewhere that Vlad tortured and killed his own people because they supposedly broke his rules and laws of order. Children, babies and women were also tortured. Vlad left no exceptions.

AAAHHHH! BUT there was a method to his madness.
Prince Vlad Teplar was made a member of the Order of the Dragon by the Vatican and he was charged with keeping the infidel Turks out of Europe. The Order of the Dragon was an extremest Catholic military order.
Prince Vlad and Romania/Transylvania were the front line against an invasion by the Ottoman Empire. The muslim Turks were savage and ruthless fighters, they did not mess around in battle. So Vlad had to be the ’shock troops’ of Christian Europe and could not mess around in battle.
The impaling was basically ruthless pyschological warfare against the infidel Turk, and it seemed to have worked. Captured Ottoman documents of that time period record the horror expressed by the tough Turkish troops at the sight of thousands of impaled bodies lining their route of march into Romania. Just as the Romans crucified 6,000 rebel slaves in the Spartacus uprising and lined the Appian way with the crucified bodies of dying slaves, so did Vlad the Impaler lined the roads to his country with impaled Turks and traitors and criminals.
The battles between Prince Vlad and his troops and the Ottomans were some of the most henious in history. Yet Vlad kept the Ottomans out of Europe.
In this way Prince Vlad the Impaler was one of three in European history who resorted to extremism to oust the muslim presence along with Charlesmartel (Chuck the Hammer) and Rodrigo de Vivar (’El Cid’).

Vlad’s father was under considerable political pressure from the Ottoman sultan. Threatened with invasion, he gave a promise to be the vassal of the Sultan and gave up his two younger sons as hostages so that he would keep his promise.
These years were influential in shaping Vlad’s character; he was often whipped by his Ottoman captors for being stubborn and rude. He developed a well-known hatred for Radu and for Mehmed, who would later become the sultan. According to McNally and Florescu, he also distrusted his own father for trading him to the Turks and betraying the Order of the Dragon oath to fight them.
