If my memory serves me right it was by the churches early on and still is by some churches. So naturally people had to buy it and read it to find out why it was banned. Best thing for a writer to be banned so even more will read it. The talk of banning it seems to be now in this day and age. Groups are trying to ban it alone with books like Harry Potter series. Was researching it just now because I was wondering and it was a minor hit in it’s first printing and gained more speed as years went by. It was years ahead of it’s time.
I found a website that may be able to help you in your search. I’m not sure if there has been an attempt for large scale banning or challenging, but I think I read that some high schools will take it off the required reading lists for students. This website is the American Library Association. Hope this helps.
ps. you’ll need to scroll down the page for lists listed by year.
