Vertigo is called a horror film, and there is absolutely no science fiction element in that film. That is why they are categorized in two seperate genres. Films like Alien, and Soylent Green can be called either horror or science fiction. But films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Oldboy are one or the other, neither film has elements of the other genre. Just because some films in one genre have similar elements in another genre does not mean they are the same thing.

No, horror is horror, science fiction is science fiction, that is why they have the two categories and not just the one.
Horror has more of that "scary" plot outline and would be more grouped toward suspense and not so much toward science fiction.
A horror movie can also be based on actual events where science fiction is false.

Well, "I Am Legend" is classified as "horror", when I see it more as science fiction.

Clear-cut genre systems can’t encompass every single movie. What is Alien? Horror or science fiction? The basic skeletal plot is the of some people running around with and unstoppable killer on their heels? Sound much different than a typical slasher flick?
The said, different movies work in different ways - some excite us, some frighten us, and some make us laugh. And science fiction can be a template with anyone of these kinds of movies. I.e.:
Alien, The Thing - science fiction horror
Aliens - science fiction action
Spaceballs - science fiction comedy

Not necessarily - depends on the type of horrifying element.
Alien, Predator, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Mimic - SF horror
Dracula, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Mummy - Fantasy horror
The Hills Have Eyes, Silence of the Lambs, Saw - Realistic horror
