HELLLP? my vampire masquerade game is trippin..?

so i bought the game, loved playing it but know i am stuck. how? well i am basically near the beginning, and trying to enter the sewers to do the quest where i go to the haunted house, but i cant. they wont highlight or give me any form of entry, plus i cant complete the lilly quest either cause the trunk will open but it wont let me get the diary. i need help. are there any patches that can fix this or am I doing something wrong. i cant continue on and i love the game and the series, please help
