Countries ending with ia?
Why are there so many countries and places that end with ia in their native languages and in English? Such as Italia, Romania, Australia, Austria, Moldavia, Wallachia, Transylvania, Germania (used to exist), Latvia, Russia, Zelandia(undersea continent), Bulgaria, Serbia, Armenia, Albania, India, Asia, Indonesia, Croatia, Slovenia, and a lot more.
For those of you saying that Asia is not a country I also said PLACES.
Italia is Italy in Italian.

A lot of them get their names from Latin - Germania, for example. When newer countries had to be named, the English followed the pattern established by the Romans. All the names ending in -ia are what they’re known as in the English-speaking world. The names are different in the language of the country concerned.
